SUNDAY, JUNE 10, 2012 DELIA Park

A 5K run/walk, 1Mile fun run and family fun event

to benefit Utica Community Schools Junior High Sports Programs

All school districts are experiencing challenging times in addressing funding issues, causing the UCS junior high sports programs to be at risk . Committed parents, educators, community members and students stepped up to the challenge to preserve the football, cheerleading, track and boys and girls basketball programs at all seven UCS junior high schools.

The Save our Sports 5K and family event is an opportunity to show your support for the children in the Utica Community Schools. Funding Junior High sports will benefit our students at all levels, as we work to preserve future sports opportunities for current elementary age students and maintain a program to feed and maintain superior sports rankings at the high school level.

The 5K run/walk , 1Mile fun run and family event will be held Sunday, June 10th at Delia Park located at 18 mile and Ryan Road in Sterling Heights. Join us as a sponsor, walker or competitive runner or just bring your family for some food and fun.

Each family attending the event will receive a packet of fun summer fun coupons and promotions from our sponsors.

Rachel’s Challenge is coming to Browning!

Due to your generosity, Browning’s PTA is able to treat our students to Rachel’s Challenge —an inspirational program that is committed to igniting and sustaining a deliberate chain reaction of thoughtfulness. The Rachel’s Challenge Elementary program is designed to instill values such as kindness, compassion, goal setting and acceptance at a young age.

Rachel Scott modeled this way of life and believed that if one person showed compassion, it could spread to others around the individual. Her hands of kindness are now reaching people all over the world, and we want to encourage our students to do the same. The content is geared towards addressing root problems of isolation, prejudice, and bullying in a manner appropriate for younger audiences. Students are encouraged to accept Rachel’s challenges and model her behavior. The program focuses on the inspirational way she lived her life. The Browning assembly is scheduled for Monday, January 23rd.

On Wednesday, January 25th at 7:00 p.m., there will be a Rachel’s Challenge Community event at Henry Ford II High School in the Performing Arts Center. The community event is family-friendly and audience members will have the opportunity to hear an incredible story of courage and hope.  During the presentation, the hosts will show a four-minute documentary of Columbine and then share the legacy that Rachel Scott left behind and a simple challenge to anyone who will accept it:

“Treat others with kindness and compassion, and you just may change the world you live in.”

We are very excited to offer Rachel’s Challenge to our students and community. To date, Rachel’s Challenge has presented to 16,663,229 people worldwide. Browning Elementary is proud to add to that amazing number in the beginning of the New Year! Ford High School had the High School Presentation earlier this fall, and Bemis Junior High is making plans to have the Rachel’s Challenge Middle School Program later this year, too. Please note that each program is developmentally appropriate for each school, and that the content and delivery model does vary for each age group.

We look forward to seeing you all there on January 25th—what a perfect way to start 2012!
